Project Overview

A continuation of Ozcast’s involvement in the Western Sydney International Airport (WSIA) development, the M12 Crossing is a bridge that enables the new Sydney Metro to go over the new M12 Motorway and connect directly to the new airport. A joint venture with CPB and United Infrastructure, what set this important transport-linking project apart was the fact that this was a top-down construction. The bridge had to be built on the ground  first, and then the motorway dug out from underneath it.

Timing was critical. Once the piles (which will go on to become the supporting bridge columns) had been put in place, the bridge needed to be complete by August 24, by which time the dig out of the area beneath the bridge had to be completed in order for the motorway build to start on time. Ozcast’s reputation for producing top-quality precast parapets, at scale and on time, was a key factor in being chosen to take on this task.

Scope

Ozcast’s involvement in the bridge part of the WSIA project involved 3D modelling and precasting 175 parapets to fit onto just over 411 linear metres of bridge. Producing up to 8 parapets a day – and being able to safely store them in readiness to be used – enabled Ozcast to meet the tight timeline and complete the bridge part of the job successfully.

The other aspect of the build was to design, precast and fit 104 panels to cover the piles between the bridge and the road. These oval-shaped panels not only required to be structurally robust, they were also required to feature subtle patterns to engender an ‘urban ambiance’. Ozcast’s ability to produce 15 panels a day – both curved and straight to fit together perfectly to achieve the oval shape – and all with the desired artistic design touches, meant that the last panel was successfully added in August 2024

This demonstrates Ozcast’s commitment to aligning with the project timelines, while ensuring resource optimisation and efficiency.

Outcome

The collaborative and adaptive strategy employed by Ozcast in response to the WSIA project’s various requirements exemplifies a proactive approach to large-scale infrastructure development challenges. Ozcast has ensured that its contributions remain aligned with the overall project progress, avoiding unnecessary resource allocation or logistical complications. This approach not only demonstrates Ozcast’s capability to meet the dynamic needs of a project of such magnitude, but also highlights the importance of flexibility and collaboration between contractors and suppliers in the successful execution of infrastructure projects.

As the WSIA project progresses towards its completion, the partnership between AeroWest JV and Ozcast will continue to play a crucial role in realising the vision of a modern, efficient and globally-connected airport that serves as a gateway to Western Sydney and beyond.
