The Berry to Bomaderry Princes Highway Upgrade is a significant infrastructure project aimed at enhancing road safety, traffic flow, and accessibility along one of New South Wales’ key transportation corridors. Engaged by Seymour Whyte in 2019, the project sought to address the challenges posed by the existing highway’s limitations, including congestion and accident-prone areas.
A critical component of this upgrade was the aesthetic and functional enhancement of the highway’s barriers, specifically through the installation of shotcrete walls adorned with patterned silver fascia panels.
Ozcast was tasked with producing a high-quality aesthetic covering for the shotcrete wall, a crucial element in the highway’s visual and structural upgrade. The original design called for 209 patterned silver fascia panels, each designed with minor adjustments to ensure uniqueness while maintaining a cohesive look.
To optimise production efficiency and cost-effectiveness, Ozcast innovated by casting the panels in batches of three, allowing for production tolerances that reduced the need for 200 individual panel designs to 60 different types. This approach not only saved time, but also significantly cut down on the project’s budget.
Additionally, Ozcast undertook in-house testing to identify a suitable anti-graffiti product that would protect the panels, without detracting from their aesthetic appeal. This testing was crucial in ensuring the long-term durability and maintenance ease of the wall coverings.
The outcome of Ozcast’s involvement in the Berry to Bomaderry Princes Highway Upgrade project was a visually striking and durable shotcrete wall that significantly contributed to the highway’s overall safety and aesthetic appeal. The unique patterned silver fascia panels, each slightly different from the next, provided a visually engaging barrier that complemented the natural surroundings while enhancing the roadway’s safety features. The successful reduction in the number of panel types required, thanks to Ozcast’s innovative production approach, resulted in significant time and cost savings for the project.
Furthermore, the effective selection of an anti-graffiti coating ensured that the panels would maintain their appearance and functionality for years to come, minimising maintenance needs and costs. This project stands as a testament to the effectiveness of precast concrete solutions in infrastructure projects, showcasing the potential for aesthetic appeal, durability, and cost-efficiency.
